Creative project designs
Last year Glass Installations were delighted to be involved in an extremely innovative design, using our Featherweight Foil Mirrors. Many of the creative projects using Featherweight Mirrors use the product to create larger scale designs where normal glass mirror would not produce one piece of glass. This project utilised another aspect of Featherweight’s versatility – its lightweight quality. The Featherweight Mirror, made of mylar film using specialist heating process and machinery to stretch over aluminium frames weighs just 1.5kg per square metre.
We were approached by two young Manchester based engineers; David Leonard & Emmanuel Biard. They were designing and building a piece of artwork to be constructed and fitted into The Warehouse Project, Manchester. The design is almost like a mechanical mirrorball, or a mirror-square?! The Warehouse Project is a series of club nights in Greater Manchester, and has been building in popularity since 2006.
The Design
The design named “The Testudo” is a Mechanical Art Piece, for which we provided 78 pieces of 370mm squared featherweight foil mirrors on aluminium frames. The designers developed these into opening “windows” on hinges which are electronically controlled.
Quite obviously from the design, glass mirror would have been extremely difficult to work with from both a health and safety point of view and an ease of use and practical sense. We encourage designers from all backgrounds; art, music, engineers, architecture to challenge us to produce an effective and highly practical design which will capture their audience.
Featherweight Foil mirror is not only lightweight and easy to handle, it is also cost effective and has exactly the same reflection quality as glass.
