What is a chequer plate?
Chequer plate also sometimes called chequered plate is a plate of embossed steel or aluminium with a pattern of projections on one side, the other side is smooth. The pattern is usually of diamond and can be other shapes. It is as stated normally made of steel or stainless steel, but can be made out of aluminium plate materials. Steel plates are usually made by hot rolling; some manufacturers make a raised pressed diamond design. Chequer plate is sometimes also known as diamond plate, tread plate, Durbar floor plate. We usually supply our chequer plate in aluminium.
What is chequer plate used for?
Chequer plate is skid-proof because of its textured design it is widely used in the engineering and construction industry on floors to reduce the risk of slipping. Usual applications include: catwalks, industrial settings, inside of ambulances or fire engines, stair ways and other walkways. It can also be found in areas of shops to protect workers from slipping.
Chequer plate does however have an attractive decorative element to the design and therefore is commonly used in modern industrial designs.
Our use
We use chequer plate for various reasons and its decorative design effect is one of them. We use the 5-bar 2mm aluminium chequer plate on the walls mainly in gymnasiums in the weight lifting area. We use chequer plate for its protective properties against walls and our mirror installations, most commonly in the weightlifting area of gyms. We have recently installed full walls of chequer plate as well as split walls with Image “6” Mirrors. As you can see from the photos it has a decorative look and fits in well with the modern design of most gyms. When using weights either free or on machines, often mirrors can become damaged or broken if weights are dropped or rolled on the floor. With our split system you get the benefit of having a mirror to check posture without the possibility of damage.
