On 16th January our project manager, Darrell Edge and Lewis Atherton one of our installers headed to Queensberry Police Amateur Boxing Club to install a run of our Image 6 mirrors that we’d kindly donated after hearing the club’s story.
Club history
The club was founded in 1981 by two brothers Sam and John Donnelly, shortly after Mark Griffiths joined the team. Moving around from building to building Queensberry Police ABC didn’t feel like they had a permanent home. Setting down some more permanent, albeit unstable roots in the upstairs of the Jubilee Club in Trent Vale the boxing club were just treading water.
After a rough 12 months, with uncertainties of whether they’d be able to stay at the Jubilee Club Peter Plant of Peter Plant Associates, had the idea of forming a charitable organisation. This was a success and they were able to purchase the entire club and start putting their own stamp on it.
Mark Griffiths, Matt Crowe of PM Training and Peter Plant are extremely pleased that they have been able secure an environment that they can finally make their own to maintain the safe and friendly environment that they have been providing for the past 38 years.
Mark posted these kind words on their Facebook page ‘We would like to take this opportunity to thank most sincerely Steve Platt Director of Glass installations who very kindly donated to our club a number of large safety backed gym mirrors and also provided his installers Lewis Atherton and Darrell Edge to come along today and fix them to our gym walls. Thank you guys your generosity is overwhelming and it’s good to know that there are people like yourself Steve that see the good in what a club like ours does for the community. Get in touch with this company for any gym or any other glass installations they are top class. Team Queensberry.’
Whilst we were talking to Mark about the club we could feel his passion for helping the young people of Stoke on Trent, he said that it helps them to keep of the streets, allowing them to make friendships and gain confidence. By having these mirrors installed it will enable the members to perfect their stances and foot placements. We sent two of our team for a few hours to install these mirrors and we are pleased that this small gesture has made a massive difference already.
Queensberry Police ABC rely on Lottery Heritage Funding and support from the community and local businesses such as ourselves. The trustees of the club are hoping to improve all aspects of the building such as adding security gates to the entrance to allow the building to be secure when the club is empty, unfortunately as there is a substantial cost to this and they are having to hope that someone will be able to help them and donate this to the club. They have ideas to open the club to other members of the public, such as opening a lounge to enable elderly members of the community to use their facilities, but the building requires a new kitchen – again, this comes at a cost. If anyone has any help they can provide to the team it would be greatly appreciated, contact Mark on the number below if you can in anyway.
On 25th January Queensberry Police ABC are presenting an evening of all female amateur boxing. If you’d like to get a ticket give Mark a call on 07788108652. All of the team here wish you a great evening.
