Recently we have been asked in earnest the question of whether we manufacture mirrors to make the user look slimmer. We are jokingly asked if we can put ‘slimming mirrors’ in the ladies gym and likewise in the male weights room if we could make ‘one of those mirrors that makes you look bigger’! So, to discuss – can a mirror make your appearance bigger or smaller, thinner, taller, bulkier? In very simple terms, this is a myth! Unless manufacturing concave or convex purposely for entertainment or security reasons all mirrors including float glass, acrylic, polycarbonate, stainless steel and foil mirrors are manufactured perfectly flat.
So why do some mirrors look different than others?
When fitted by a reputable specialist mirror installer the installation should remain flat without distortion. So if you are seeing a smaller or bigger reflection, this is just a result of incorrect and untrained fitting. There are of course many hazards that would create distortions within a bank of mirrors. These could include concave or convex walls or worse still a wall that appears to be twisted, i.e. the top and bottom adjacent corners are not on the same plane. This would baffle the inexperienced fitter resulting in a hall of mirrors situation. When this result is pointed out by the disgruntled customer the inexperienced company simply blames the state of the wall. At Glass Installations Ltd we conduct a thorough survey before any work begins. This I prior to manufacturing any materials. Possible problematic areas are then pointed out to the client or the clients agent, this way we can manufacture materials or suggest works to be undertaken to eliminate any surprises upon completion. At Glass Installations we provide a training programme. All of our fitters are trained in correct fitting techniques, they have all also been working within the industry for many years and have experienced most common problems.
Our range of mirror products are developed to assist with such problems and our experienced technical and sales staff are happy to advise on suitable mirrors from our products for your requirements and uneven walls.
